I am pleased to announce that Beyond Katrina has won the 2006 Award of Excellence in the Professional Category from the Society of New Communications Research. The society's awards program honors innovative organizations and professionals who are pioneering the use of social media (i.e., blogs, wikis, podcasts, collaborative tools and other froms of participatory communications in the areas of marketing, public relations, and advertising, politics, entertainment, academics, and community cultural development). The award winners were announced at the society's inaugural awards gala in Boston.
I'm honored to be among the first group of honorees from the SNCR and humbled by national recognition of what began as an online passion. Clearly Americans and people of the world looking for a deeper understanding are relying on blogs like "Beyond Katrina" to provide depth, scope and context of events surrounding us each day. I dedicate this award to each and every of Katrina's survivors, and to the rememberance of its victims - I am also pleased to have this additional opportunity to raise national awareness for the many challenges gulf coast citizens and leaders face in the long days of recovery, ahead.
